Okay, I know I may be late for this movie, but better late than never right? I have no idea I will love The Greatest Showman movie. I never even steal a glance at this movie when I see the cinema list. All I ever do was scrolling in instagram and found some people praising it and when my friend invited me to watch this movie, I said yes, turns out I love the moral of this story (and the original songs too!)
This movie is about how P.T. Barnum (played by Hugh Jackman) rose from a poor boy into a famous showman. He manages to woo Charity (played by Michelle Williams), the daughter of a wealthy family whom Barnum father's tailored to, marry her and gives her a life that he promised. Although in the middle of the journey, he left her and their daughters for a merely fame but then he decided to come back, realizing for whom this all effort he makes.
I love Barnum's character in this movie. He was really a good leader and a visionary. At the beginning of the movie, it was clear how little Barnum see himself as an entertainer by looking at his own reflection in a uniform display. He has his vision already at such a young age. He was brave to take the risk too, by taking loans from the Bank to buy the Barnum Museum, filled with animal wax statues. He was excited with his new business, promoting it everywhere but failed until her daughters told him that he needs something real, something that moves. That's when his imagination works again. He recruit some unique people (whom was judged as odd people) to join him into the show. There was a scene where he came to a house where a dwarf and his mother lives. He persuades him to join his show but get a "you want people to laugh at me" from him. Barnum replied the dwarf "They're laughing anyway, kid, so you might as well get paid." The dwarf then shut the door right on his face. Barnum then knows the right way to persuade him and it works. In this scene I can see Barnum's ability to see things from different perspective, he also knows what people really want even when they themselves didn't know they want it. In this case, the dwarf wants people to respect him, which Barnum knows, and that's how General Tom Thumb was born in the circus. I love how he support his team. I remember what he said to Lettie, a nice voice woman with beard; "They don't understand you but they will."
In the middle of this movie, I learned that Barnum was also a human, he made mistakes. As he was rising up in his fame, he became greedy. He meets Jenny Lind, the famous opera singer, and decided to make Lind team up with him to make a show. He then left his family for making tour show with Lind but ended up in a scandal and that's enough to make him realize that he once started all of this because of a life that he promised to his wife. By the support from his team (whom once he betrayed when he was successful with Lind's first show), he manage to win Charity back. From this scene, I learned that people make mistakes and it is okay. What matters is the things that we do to fix that.
Besides Barnum, I also love the sacrifices that Charity make in order to stay together with Barnum, she was also a big hearted wife, forgiving her husband for the mistakes that he did. And also Philip Carlyle (played by Zac Efron), Barnum's business partner. He used to live by the rules until he met Barnum, he then take the risk by joining Barnum's show.
Overall, this musical movie was worth to watch. The actor and actress plays really well, especially Hugh Jackman, I didn't know that he will able to play this kind of movie since he was the iconic Wolverine, but he did good here. The songs also nice to hear and what makes this movie worth to watch is the lessons that you can learned, whether you are a fan of musical or not.
